Leading the Charge in Green Job Skills Development – COP28 UCN Thematic Group

Under the leadership of Maya Haddad from Ajman University, the Green Job Skills Thematic Group of the Universities Climate Network (UCN) is making strides in preparing the next generation for a sustainable and green economy. This thematic group, consisting of members from universities across the UAE, is focused on equipping youth with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in emerging green sectors, addressing the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the context of global climate challenges.

Purpose and Mandate the Green Job Skills Thematic Group strives to simplify the gap between the skills required for green jobs and the current capabilities of the workforce. The group emphasizes the development of youth knowledge and skills that are essential for a prosperous economy. This objective is accomplished through comprehensive strategies such as skill assessment, curriculum development, policy advocacy, and partnerships with industry leaders.

Key Objectives and Activities:

• Skill Assessment and Development: The group conducts in-depth assessments to identify gaps in green job skills, focusing on both current and emerging needs. They develop training programs and certifications that complement industry standards, aimed at promoting upskilling and reskilling initiatives among the existing workforces.
• Curriculum Development: A major focus of the thematic group is adapting educational curricula to include green job training. By establishing competency-based learning modules, they ensure that university programs meet the evolving requirements of green industries.
