Building a Sustainability-Savvy Community: Ajman University's Assessment Approach to Sustainability Literacy
Ajman University's Office of Sustainability recognizes the importance of a knowledgeable community equipped to address today's sustainability challenges. To assess and enhance understanding, they have developed a comprehensive 30-question tool.
This assessment gauges the understanding of students, faculty, and staff across key sustainability areas:
- Sustainability Basics: Examines foundational knowledge of environmental principles and solutions.
- Environmental Principles and Solutions: Examines foundational knowledge of environmental issues, their causes, and potential solutions.
- Social and Economic Impacts: Evaluates awareness of the social and economic dimensions of sustainability.
- UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Assesses understanding of these critical global goals and their application.
Dual Benefits:
This assessment serves a valuable two-fold purpose:
- Program Evaluation: The assessment helps the Office of Sustainability gauge the effectiveness of the overall training sessions, programs, and initiatives. This allows for continuous improvement and ensures these initiatives are meeting the needs of the community.
- Learning Outcomes Measurement: Instructors teaching courses aligned with the SDGs can utilize this tool to measure student learning outcomes in a standardized way. This provides valuable insights into student comprehension and informs teaching approaches.
