Ajman University made a notable contribution as a knowledge partner at the 18th UN Climate Change Conference of Youth (COY18), held as a precursor to COP28. The university delivered an engaging session titled "Climate Changers: Youth-led Solutions for a Greener Future," showcasing its commitment to sustainability and youth empowerment.
Led by Maya Haddad, Sustainability Manager at Ajman University, the session emphasized the significant role youth play in driving climate action. Haddad set the tone by referring to the audience as “fellow climate champions” and highlighted the urgent need for youth-led innovation to tackle climate change. She encouraged attendees to harness their creativity and leadership to address the global climate crisis.
Several Ajman University students participated actively in the session, sharing their insights and presenting innovative solutions. The participants included Dana, Itemat, and Mesk. Dana focused on the importance of integrating renewable energy in urban planning, while Itemat presented on how sustainable architecture can reduce environmental impact. Mesk highlighted the role of community engagement in promoting environmental awareness.
The session posed key questions to participants, including “How can youth foster innovation to make cities more resilient against climate change?” and “What role can youth play in creating public awareness about sustainable transportation?” These discussions emphasized the need for youth-driven solutions to urban and environmental challenges, such as promoting electric vehicle usage and advocating for sustainable public transportation systems.
In her closing remarks, Haddad expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Together, we can build a greener future, where environmental stewardship is not just a goal but a lived reality.” Her words left the audience inspired to continue advocating for sustainable practices.
Ajman University’s active involvement at COY18 reflects its broader mission to equip young leaders with the knowledge and tools to contribute to global climate solutions. By fostering dialogue and innovative thinking, the university continues to play a pivotal role in empowering youth to take meaningful action in addressing today’s environmental challenges.
