Moderated by Dr. Rahaf Ajaj, Assistant Professor at Abu Dhabi University and UAE Chapter Leader for Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) Canada, the session addressed how these collaborations can advance renewable energy innovation, enhance sustainability, and equip future professionals with essential skills.
Ajman University’s Dr. Ahmed Awan, Associate Professor at the College of Engineering and IT, contributed significantly to the discussion. Responding to how industry can leverage academic research to improve renewable energy technologies, Dr. Awan emphasized the crucial role of universities like Ajman in driving research that can translate into practical solutions. He highlighted Ajman University’s commitment to exploring advancements in renewable technologies, positioning academia as an essential partner in improving the efficiency and sustainability of these systems.
A key project discussed was the waste-to-energy technology explored by Emirates RDF. Mr. Ashley Bryan, Operations Director, noted that academic collaboration could lower the costs of these innovative projects, ensuring they remain financially viable. He pointed to Ajman University’s research capabilities as instrumental in driving innovations that could reduce costs, particularly in projects involving municipal solid waste (MSW) conversion.
The collaboration extended beyond technology into sustainable real estate, with Mr. Musbah Abu Jarad, Executive Director at Provis Estate Management, emphasizing the importance of academia in creating environmentally friendly developments. He encouraged further cooperation with Ajman University to promote the integration of renewable energy in real estate, ensuring projects benefit local communities while being economically sustainable.
This discussion also touched on global sustainability efforts. Ms. Dina Epifanova, Global Head of Sustainability at IFFCO, discussed how the farm-to-fork strategy could benefit from renewable energy practices, suggesting that Ajman University’s research could drive innovation in sustainable food production and energy use.
