Ahead of COP28, the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) has launched the Education-Climate Declaration, calling on nations to renew their commitments to addressing the climate crisis through education. This Declaration builds on the successes of COP26 and COP27 and urges countries to accelerate the integration of climate education into national policies. The goal is to ensure that education systems become resilient, adaptive, and equipped to mitigate climate change’s impacts. Nations that endorse the Declaration before November 30, 2023, will be recognized as ‘Founding Partners’ at COP28.
The Education-Climate Declaration outlines three critical areas for action: adaptation, mitigation, and investment. Countries are encouraged to prioritize climate education in their national adaptation strategies, ensuring that all learners are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. In terms of mitigation, the Declaration highlights the need for education systems that actively contribute to reducing carbon emissions and building climate resilience. The call for increased global and domestic investment in education further emphasizes the importance of ensuring that schools and curricula are climate-smart and future-ready.
Ajman University’s participation in the Education-Climate Declaration aligns with the UAE’s broader goals of achieving climate resilience and sustainability through education. By contributing to this global effort, the university continues to play a leading role in preparing future generations to take on the challenges of climate change.
This Declaration is a pivotal step toward uniting governments, organizations, and educational institutions around a shared vision of climate action through education, reinforcing the critical role education plays in shaping a sustainable future.
