In a significant initiative, Ajman University, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, is leading a project titled "Institutional Pledges for Nature" aimed at setting ambitious biodiversity targets. This project, set to be presented on Friday, 1 December 2023, from 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM at the Greening Education Hub in the COP28 Green Zone, Expo City Dubai, brings together global academic institutions to discuss the role universities play in advancing biodiversity conservation.
The event will feature experts from renowned institutions including Ajman University, University of Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, Vanier College, TU Delft, and University of Bejaia, among others. The panel will include contributions from prominent figures such as Emily Stott, University of Oxford, Maya Haddad, Ajman University, and Dr. Nico Tillie, TU Delft.
A key focus of the project is the Nature Positive Universities vision, which emphasizes how universities can lead biodiversity restoration efforts through measurable targets and actions. The initiative calls for universities to publicly tackle their biodiversity impacts, facilitate nature restoration, and empower students to act as ambassadors for nature conservation.
The 4Rs framework: Refrain, Reduce, Restore, Renew is central to this vision, guiding institutions in reducing their ecological footprint while leading their constituencies—including students, staff, and alumni—towards nature-positive outcomes. The event will highlight the importance of equitable partnerships between universities in the global north and south, fostering a collaborative approach to biodiversity challenges.
Developed by the University of Oxford and Ajman University, this initiative underscores the essential role of academic institutions in the global movement to protect and restore nature. It also showcases how higher education can drive grassroots action, promote biodiversity metrics, and inspire a new generation of conservation leaders.
