Ajman University Becomes the First UAE Signatory of the CANIE Accord, Strengthening Global Climate Leadership in Higher Education
Ajman University has proudly joined the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE) as a Signatory to the CANIE Accord, becoming the first university in the United Arab Emirates to take this bold step toward advancing climate action in the international education sector.
The CANIE Accord, established in alignment with the Paris Agreement’s objective to limit global warming to 1.5°C, represents the international education community’s collective commitment to reducing emissions, fostering climate literacy, and embedding sustainability into all levels of educational practice.
By signing the Accord, Ajman University reaffirms its dedication to sustainable transformation, climate-conscious operations, and education that empowers future generations to lead with responsibility and purpose. The University’s participation underscores its strategic alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, while advancing the UAE’s national agenda for net-zero emissions and environmental stewardship.

According to the official CANIE signatory listing, Ajman University has committed to 61 actions across five thematic areas, demonstrating comprehensive engagement with the Accord’s framework. The University achieved full completion under Leadership and Influencing and Climate Education, while advancing measurable progress in Emissions Accounting, Travel, and Sustainable Operations.
Through this membership, Ajman University joins an international network of institutions and professionals working collaboratively to design policies, share resources, and drive measurable progress in reducing emissions, promoting climate education, and advancing equity within global learning communities.
This milestone further amplifies Ajman University’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, which include participation in major international platforms, the integration of environmental awareness across curricula, and campus-wide efforts to promote green practices through the Office of Sustainability.
