Ajman University continues its commitment to global sustainability through active participation in key climate education initiatives at COP28, held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. This international conference provides a platform for countries to solidify their commitments to climate change education, with UNESCO taking a leading role.
Ajman University’s Sustainability Manager, Ms. Maya Haddad, and a delegation of students attended various sessions organized by UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership (GEP). These events focused on enhancing climate change education worldwide, ensuring that every learner is climate-ready. The University’s involvement highlights its dedication to integrating sustainability into education and driving action on a global scale.
A significant highlight was the launch of the Greening Education Hub, a pioneering initiative by the UAE Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNESCO and the GEP. Throughout COP28, the hub hosted more than 200 side events, emphasizing the role of education in tackling the climate crisis. Discussions centered on green schools, curriculum reform, teacher training, and community engagement, aligning with the thematic program established by the COP28 Presidency.
On December 8th, 2023, Ms. Haddad and the students participated in the Greening Education Partnership Annual Meeting, where high-level discussions were held involving education and environment ministers from various countries. The focus was on advancing the four pillars of the GEP: green schools, green curriculum, green teacher training, and green communities. During this session, The Declaration on the Common Agenda for Education and Climate Change was endorsed, calling for a unified effort to integrate climate education into national policies.
Additionally, Ajman University contributed insights during discussions aimed at identifying tangible actions to reinforce climate change education. Their input was well-received, showcasing the University’s efforts to promote sustainability on campus and engage students in climate-focused initiatives.
As COP28 draws to a close, the discussions will reflect on the achievements made during the conference, with a focus on the future direction of green education.
