The College of Architecture, Arts and Design successfully concluded the second edition of its highly anticipated "Sustainable Week," an initiative designed to empower the next generation of architects and designers with the knowledge and passion for environmental stewardship. Spearheaded by Dr. Muna Salameh, a leading expert with a PhD in Sustainable and Built Environment, the week served as a dynamic platform for inspiring young leaders to build a greener future.
The event was inaugurated with opening remarks from Dr. Muna Salameh, followed by addresses from Dr. Riad Saraiji, Dean of the College, and Dr. Jihad Awad, Head of the Architecture Department, setting a collaborative and forward-thinking tone for the days ahead.
A Week of Insight and Hands-On Learning
Sustainable Week featured a rich program of lectures and interactive workshops, delving into the core principles and practical applications of sustainability in architecture and design.
Day One focused on foundational knowledge, with Dr. Muna Salameh delivering a keynote on essential sustainability principles. Ms. Maya Haddad, Sustainability Manager, emphasized integrating these concepts into education and practice. The day was capped with a special guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Khaled Galal Ahmed from the United Arab Emirates University, who shared valuable insights from his extensive experience.
Day Two explored the synergy between traditional wisdom and modern design. Dr. Salameh presented a lecture titled "Passive Design Solutions: Future of the Past," which was immediately followed by a hands-on workshop. Led by Dr. Salameh and Ms. Ayat from Ajman University, participants explored sustainable practices inspired by time-honored architectural designs.
Day Three highlighted the creative potential of circular economies. Dr. Salameh lectured on the critical role of recycled materials, after which senior students led a practical workshop. They guided their peers in creatively repurposing discarded materials into art, turning theory into tangible action.
A Core Commitment to Future-Ready Education
The initiative underscores the College's deep commitment to embedding sustainability into its educational fabric.
Dr. Muna Salameh stated, “Increasing awareness of sustainability among architecture students is essential, as they play a crucial role in designing solutions that help mitigate climate change. By instilling these values early, we prepare them to become responsible architects who can shape a sustainable and resilient built environment for future generations.”
Echoing this sentiment, Dean Dr. Riad Saraiji highlighted that Sustainable Week is a direct reflection of the College’s vision. “We are committed to providing students with educational opportunities that equip them to face future challenges. These events offer a unique platform for learning and interacting with experts, which enriches our students' experience and opens new horizons in architecture, arts, and design.”
By fostering an environment of innovation and practical learning, the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design continues to demonstrate its leadership in preparing students to shape a more sustainable and resilient world.
