Ajman University leads a key COP28 session on Climate Change and Academia
Ajman University took a prominent role at COP28 by developing and leading the session titled "From Foundation to Legacy: UAE Universities Network for Climate Change", held on December 10th, 2023, at the House of Sustainability, UAE Pavilion, Expo City Dubai. The session was a key part of the COP28 Green Zone, bringing together various members from UAE academia to discuss the vital role of UAE universities in addressing climate change. Ajman University was represented by Maya Haddad, Sustainability Manager, who played an integral part in leading this roundtable discussion.
Hosted by the UAE Universities Climate Network (UCN), the session featured contributions from Maya Haddad (Ajman University), Suparna Mathur (New York University Abu Dhabi), Heather Armour (COP28/American University of Sharjah), and Rasha Bayoumi (University of Birmingham). Together, they explored the UCN’s mission to foster collaboration on climate research, decarbonization, and student engagement. Haddad highlighted Ajman University’s leadership in promoting sustainability initiatives, both on campus and in the broader community, emphasizing the university’s commitment to public and student involvement in climate action.
The prominent contributions of the UCN before and during COP28 were highlighted, and all participants voiced their hope for the continuation of the legacy of the UCN under the new leadership of Ms. Haddad and Dr. Bayoumi.
The discussion also delved into UCN's successes and future opportunities, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts among UAE universities in achieving national climate goals. Haddad’s participation reinforced Ajman University’s dedication to advancing sustainability and its alignment with the UAE’s Vision 2050. The event showcased the University’s strategic contributions to shaping the legacy of UCN post-COP28, positioning Ajman University as a key player in climate resilience and sustainable development at national and international levels.
