Student Project Spotlight: “WATER MAT” Smart Design for Water Conservation and Climate Action

Alya Almazrooqi a graphic Desgin student has designed a published project on Behance is tackling water waste in arid climates through smart, everyday design. Titled “WATER MAT,” the project is described as a smart, eco-friendly shower mat that collects and repurposes greywater, turning a routine daily activity into an opportunity for conservation. At its core is a multi-layered mat that captures water during showers and redirects it for non-potable uses such as plant irrigation, helping households reduce their water footprint without changing their daily habits.

The project, published on Behance in December 2025, goes beyond the physical product. It includes a fully developed mobile application and website that allow users to track water usage in real time, view savings statistics, and learn about sustainable water practices. The app highlights potential water savings of up to 70%, making conservation measurable and actionable. A comprehensive branding and awareness campaign further supports the initiative, featuring a cohesive visual identity and powerful slogans such as “Save Every Drop” and “Shower Smart, Grow Green,” aimed at shifting public behavior toward mindful water consumption.

Supporting SDG 13: Climate Action

This project directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 13 by promoting water efficiency and reducing the energy required for water heating, pumping, and treatment. By lowering household water waste, the Water Mat helps decrease the carbon footprint associated with water systems, a key component of climate mitigation. It also demonstrates how creative student work can contribute to the UAE’s broader sustainability goals by encouraging everyday environmental responsibility. The project further aligns with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
