
Graduate students in MBA 605 (Operations Supply Chain Integration) are undertaking a semester-long research analysis on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), using Kalyani FeRRESTA: India’s first green steel company as a real-world case study. The project accounts for 50% of the course mark and concludes with in-class presentations.
The research examines how organizations in hard-to-abate industries can decarbonize their products and processes, what qualifies as green steel and which technologies enable it, how steel production waste streams can be managed to create circularity, and what trade regulations such as CBAM mean for global green steel production. It also highlights the role of green financing in developing countries and the importance of ESG and sustainable enterprise models.
Students investigate why Kalyani Steel began its green journey in 2022, compare decarbonization strategies and technologies pursued by leading Indian steelmakers in 2023, and analyze greenhouse gas emissions under Scopes 1, 2, and 3. Using case exhibits, they compute emissions for crude steel produced through BF-BOF and EAF technologies versus green steel, and consider why Scope 3 emissions were not included. The Saarloah plant strategy, emission and cost differences, pricing approaches for green steel products, and future technology investment decisions are also central to the analysis.
By connecting CCUS, green steel, and sustainable supply chain integration, this course-based research prepares students to address real-world challenges in industrial decarbonization and net-zero transitions.

This research supports SDG 13 by advancing understanding of how carbon capture, utilization, and storage, green steel technologies, circular economy practices, and climate policy can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.
