Student Project Spotlight: “EcoPharm AI” Smart Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Machine
A new student research project at Ajman University is tackling the growing challenge of pharmaceutical waste through an innovative smart disposal machine. Titled “EcoPharm AI,” the project is described as a smart, automated system designed to ensure safe and sustainable management of expired medicines and medical waste. At its core is a machine that accepts unused or expired medications, sorts them by dosage form, and rewards users with points that can be redeemed for vouchers turning a routine environmental action into an engaging and rewarding experience.
The project, developed by a team of College of Pharmacy students at Ajman University, responds to a pressing global issue: global pharmaceutical spending has reached an astounding $1.2 trillion annually, according to the IQVIA Institute, yet improper disposal of medicines remains widespread. A survey of 112 respondents conducted as part of the study revealed that 73.2% dispose of solid dosage forms in the rubbish bin, while 96.4% agreed that improper disposal harms the environment and health. These findings underscored the need for a centralized, user-friendly solution.
The EcoPharm machine features automated sorting and IoT connectivity, allowing users to scan their medicine, select the appropriate category (solid, semi-solid, liquid, or gaseous), place the item into the machine, and collect reward points. The system is designed to raise awareness among future generations about best practices in medical waste disposal, motivate the public to participate, protect the environment from pollution, and even benefit from recycled drugs converting them into substances such as building materials or fertilizers.
By preventing contamination and promoting responsible disposal, EcoPharm offers a scalable, eco-friendly solution that supports sustainable waste management and protects public health. The project demonstrates how student innovation can address complex environmental challenges while engaging the community in meaningful action.
Supporting SDG 13: Climate Action
This project directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 13 by reducing the environmental and health hazards associated with improper pharmaceutical disposal. When medicines are flushed down sinks or thrown in regular trash, they can contaminate water systems and soil, harming ecosystems and contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. By providing a safe, centralized disposal system and incentivizing participation, EcoPharm helps prevent pollution at the source, supports circular economy principles through recycling, and reduces the carbon footprint associated with waste treatment. It also aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The project exemplifies how student research can contribute to the UAE’s broader sustainability goals by encouraging everyday environmental responsibility and protecting public health.
