Students from Ajman University’s College of Engineering and IT have developed a research presentation titled “Rethinking Green: Oasis Green, an AI-Powered Sustainable Agriculture for Extreme Climates” for the 25th Cycle of the Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition 2025. The project explores how artificial intelligence can help agriculture thrive in arid and extreme climates, where traditional farming places heavy pressure on water and land ecosystems.
With the global population expected to exceed 9.7 billion by 2050, the students ask a critical question: “How can AI make agriculture thrive where nature struggles?” Their answer is OasisGreen, a climate-resilient, AI-driven greenhouse model designed for desert regions. It combines AI forecasting, precision irrigation, and energy optimization to reduce water use by 30% and energy waste by 20%, while supporting food security and biodiversity protection.
The system architecture integrates AI vision to detect plant health and nutrient deficiencies, IoT sensors to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and humidity, machine learning to optimize irrigation, ventilation, and light cycles, and solar power for continuous renewable operation. The research also introduces a Circular AI Framework: green energy integration, compact model efficiency, hardware reuse, and lifecycle accountability for energy, water, and waste.
The students propose a pilot concept, the AI Ain Smart Agriculture Hub, featuring AI-monitored greenhouses for desert farming with 15–20% improved crop yield and strong early adoption potential across the GCC. They also call for policy and community integration: governments implementing Green AI certification, universities leading interdisciplinary AI sustainability research, industries adopting circular production for agri-tech hardware, and communities building smart farming literacy.
Looking ahead, the paper notes that Green AI could reduce total tech emissions by 4% by 2035, and AI-powered farming could help feed 2 billion people sustainably. The presentation concludes with a powerful message: “OasisGreen proves that technology and sustainability are not opposing forces but partners.”
This student research directly supports SDG 13: Climate Action by advancing climate-resilient agriculture, renewable energy use, water conservation, and low-carbon food systems. It also connects to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
