
College of Business Administration Students in Operations & Supply Chain Integration (MBA605) have developed a research presentation titled “KALYANI FeRRESTA: India’s 1st GreenSteel Is Ready!” The project prepared by Afra Muhammad, Aysha Ahmed, Reem Musleh, Salma Abdulkarim, and Lana Altakriti under Dr. Maher Itani, examines how Saarloha, part of the Kalyani Group, is producing green steel using scrap and renewable energy to cut emissions.
The research highlights hydrogen-based direct reduction (H-DR), electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, and renewable energy as core decarbonization strategies. It also applies GHG accounting scopes: Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 purchased electricity, and Scope 3 value-chain emissions. The students note that Scopes 1 and 2 are directly controllable, making them a practical starting point for emissions reduction.
Key emissions findings include: BF-BOF at 2.32 tons CO₂ per ton of steel; EAF carbon steel at 0.55; and EAF green steel at just 0.029. The project also assesses market demand, noting that EU policies such as CBAM (2026) and global buyers like Ford and Volvo are driving interest, while Indian uptake remains slower due to price sensitivity and awareness gaps. Pricing recommendations include a 10–15% premium for KALYANI FeRRESTA™ and 20–30% for FeRRESTA™ PLUS, supported by third-party certification, transparent emissions data, and client education.
The team recommends investing in green hydrogen-based DRI + EAF over traditional BF-BOF or scrap-based EAF, citing regulatory alignment, decarbonization potential, scrap scarcity risk, innovation, energy independence, government incentives, and future cost competitiveness. The work directly supports SDG 13: Climate Action by linking supply chain decisions to industrial emissions reduction and sustainable production.
