Ajman University has been awarded the Plan to Action: Year of Sustainability’s Seal in recognition of its impactful sustainability initiatives and contributions to the UAE's broader sustainability objectives.
The Year of Sustainability initiative was launched in 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, reinforcing the country’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and collaborative action for a greener future.
AU has made remarkable strides in sustainability, driving meaningful change through innovative programs that span energy conservation, waste reduction, recycling and community engagement. By fostering research, innovation, and strategic stakeholder collaboration, AU has not only achieved significant sustainability milestones but also cultivated a culture of environmental, social and economic stewardship across campus and beyond.
Commenting on the recognition, Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, said, “At Ajman University, sustainability is deeply embedded in our strategic and operational focus and aligns with our commitment to contribute meaningfully towards the UAE’s vision of a sustainable, knowledge-driven society. The award reflects our outstanding efforts and innovation in support of this vision.”
AU has made notable efforts in supporting programs, research and innovation in sustainable technologies and practices, with faculty, staff and students collaborating on projects addressing climate change, renewable energy, green skills and sustainable urban development.
Sustainable Innovation
One of the many sustainable initiatives by Ajman University that stands out is a Solar-Powered Hydroponic Net House in collaboration with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The project supports the UAE's vision for transforming its agricultural sector through the use of solar energy and hydroponic irrigation techniques to promote sustainable farming and food security.
Collaborating Globally
Collaborating globally for sustainability, Ajman University is a member of organizations dedicated to sustainability and environmental protection, including the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN), UN Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI), United Nations' Environment Program Race to Net Zero for Universities, Nature Positive Universities, Greening Education Partnership (GEP), Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), International Society of Sustainability Professionals, and Emirates Green Building Council.
