AU advances its sustainability agenda by partnering with MIT, Harvard, Princeton, and other world-leading universities to embed sustainability into institutional governance and leadership.
Ajman University (AU) has taken another significant step in its sustainability journey by joining the Sustainability Governance & Leadership Community of Practice, a prestigious initiative under the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). This global community connects higher education institutions dedicated to advancing sustainability through effective governance and leadership practices.
AU's membership places it among an elite group of world-renowned universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Princeton University, ETH Zurich, EPFL, McGill University, and the University of Toronto. As a participant in this community, Ajman University demonstrates its commitment to embedding sustainability into institutional decision-making, policies, and leadership structures to drive long-term, transformative change.
The Sustainability Governance & Leadership Community of Practice connects higher education institutions dedicated to advancing sustainability through effective governance and leadership practices. This community focuses on:
Embedding sustainability into institutional decision-making: Ensuring that sustainability considerations are central to how universities govern themselves and plan for the future.
Developing policies that drive change: Creating and implementing policies that support sustainability across all aspects of university operations.
Building leadership structures: Establishing governance models that empower leaders at all levels to champion sustainability.
Fostering leadership buy-in: Engaging senior leadership and decision-makers to prioritize and champion sustainability initiatives.
Engaging stakeholders: Involving students, faculty, staff, and external partners in sustainability governance and decision-making processes.
Members collaborate to share strategies for fostering leadership buy-in, engaging stakeholders, and creating governance models that support sustainability at all levels. Through knowledge exchange and peer learning, participants empower their institutions to lead the way in building a sustainable future.
The Sustainability Governance & Leadership Community of Practice is guided by John Robinson, Co-Chair of the University of Toronto's Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability (CECCS). John collaborates with Ron Saporta, the university's Chief Operating Officer and fellow Co-Chair, to drive sustainability initiatives across the institution. Together with CECCS staff, they focus on transforming the university's approach to sustainability in teaching, research, operations, and community engagement, with a particular emphasis on governance and leadership.
This leadership model exemplifies the community's core belief: that meaningful sustainability progress requires commitment and coordination at the highest levels of institutional governance.
Ajman University's inclusion in the Sustainability Governance & Leadership Community of Practice offers significant opportunities for the institution and its community:
Strengthen governance frameworks: Develop and refine governance models that embed sustainability into AU's decision-making processes, policies, and strategic planning.
Secure leadership commitment: Engage AU's senior leadership in championing sustainability, ensuring that environmental and social responsibility are central to the university's mission.
Engage stakeholders effectively: Create meaningful opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community partners to participate in sustainability governance.
Learn from global peers: Exchange strategies and best practices with leading institutions worldwide, benefiting from their experience in embedding sustainability into governance.
Share AU's expertise: Contribute Ajman University's own insights and experiences to the global conversation on sustainability governance, enhancing its reputation as a regional leader.
Drive long-term change: Build institutional structures that ensure sustainability remains a priority for years to come, regardless of changes in leadership or circumstances.
Enhance institutional impact: Position AU as a model for sustainability governance in the UAE and the broader Middle East region.
Sustainability governance is increasingly recognized as essential to achieving meaningful and lasting environmental and social progress. Without robust governance structures and committed leadership, sustainability initiatives risk being fragmented, underfunded, or abandoned when leadership changes.
By participating in this Community of Practice, Ajman University is addressing one of the most critical—yet often overlooked—aspects of sustainability: the institutional frameworks and leadership commitment needed to turn good intentions into lasting impact.
Ajman University's participation in the Sustainability Governance & Leadership Community of Practice represents a significant step forward in its sustainability journey. By strengthening governance and leadership around sustainability, AU is building the institutional foundation needed to achieve its environmental and social goals.
Through this global partnership, Ajman University reaffirms its commitment to sustainability leadership and its role as a catalyst for positive change. As a participant in this community, AU is proud to stand alongside the world's leading institutions in shaping a more sustainable future for higher education and society at large.
